Will changing from an analogue to a digital TV aerial justify the expense?

on Aug19 2010

I live on the coast and watch digital Freeview. Currently I have a roof analog antenna. In certain weather conditions I lose some channels. Want to shift to a digital antenna to justify the cost and solve the problem?

A higher gain aerial will help but there is no guarantee that its not the transmitter that has the issue…

You can’t change to a digital aerial. This is because digital aerials don’t exist (except in the minds of aerial salesmen). All aerials work in the analogue domain.

I live on the south coast, too (we receive our signal from the Rowridge transmitter). Our aerial is at least 15 years old and we can get over 70 Freeview TV and radio stations with no problems at all.

You may just need a better aerial than you currently have, that’s all. But don’t let anyone con you into buying a nonexistent ‘digital’ aerial…

If it’s only when bad weather occurs it may be that you need a stronger (larger) antenna. Also don’t overlook a problem with your installation. Do you need a pre amp, how many TV’s are you serving…ete

Maybe not, but in any case your freeview signal will be stronger after analogue shutdown, as transmitter power is increased.
